Lowercase Clay Studio Practices
Our vision for Capital Clay is to be a welcoming and inclusive space where young artists can explore the art and science of clay—learning confidently, creating bravely, and building community through craft. These practices ensure a safe, supportive, and focused classroom environment where every child can successfully participate and enjoy their time in the studio.
1. Expectations for Students
To keep the studio safe and fun for everyone, young artists are expected to meet our core studio expectations. We understand that children are learning and may need gentle reminders or redirection along the way:

Mutual Respect: Treat instructors, staff, and classmates with kindness and respect. Listen attentively while the instructor is speaking or demonstrating. Participate without causing ongoing distractions.

Safety First: Follow safety directions the first time they are given, use clay, tools, and equipment appropriately; and report any spills or broken items to an instructor immediately. Walk at all times, remain in your assigned work area, and keep hands to yourself. Keep food out of all class areas and always clean up using wet sponges to prevent airborne clay dust to maintain a healthy environment for everyone.

Sharing the Studio: Never touch, move, or alter another student’s work. Share tools and materials cooperatively. Keep language and behavior thoughtful and appropriate for a shared environment. Help clean up workspaces and shared tools at the end of class.
2. Guidance & Behavior Support
When a behavior challenge arises, instructors will first provide positive redirection. If a student is consistently unable to participate safely or creates an ongoing disruption that prevents others from learning, we will take the following steps privately and respectfully:

Layered Support: Instructors may speak with the student privately, adjust their seating, or contact a parent/guardian.

Early Pick-Up: If a disruption continues, a parent or guardian may be asked to pick the student up early, and a family conversation may be required before they return.

Program Withdrawal: Unsafe, aggressive, or destructive behavior will result in immediate removal from class. If a setting is ultimately not the right fit for a student to participate safely, Capital Clay Co. reserves the right to thoughtfully withdraw them from the program.
3. Parent & Guardian Guidelines
To help students build confidence independently and allow instructors to maintain a highly focused studio environment, we ask parents and guardians to follow these guidelines:

Drop-Off & Pick-Up: We highly encourage dropping students off and returning promptly at the end of class. Please ensure the studio has an accurate emergency contact number before leaving.

Lounge Etiquette: If you prefer to stay in the building, you must remain in the designated lounge area. To protect classroom focus and student privacy, parents and guardians may not enter the classroom to observe, assist, or take photos unless explicitly invited by the instructor.

Shared Space Harmony: Please keep phone calls, videos, and loud conversations outside the studio. Supervise any waiting siblings to ensure they do not wander into class areas.
4. Partnership, Accommodations & Privacy
We believe in working closely with families to ensure every student can create bravely while protecting the privacy and safety of our entire community.

Support Needs & Accommodations: Please let us know prior to the start of the course if your child requires an accommodation, support need, or has an allergy so our instructors can prepare. We work to provide reasonable support, provided our instructors can still safely supervise and instruct the entire class.

Photography & Student Privacy: Parents may photograph only their own child, and only when it does not interrupt class flow. Recording instruction from doorways or lounges is not permitted. Capital Clay staff may occasionally take photos for studio use based on your registration permissions.

Studio Boundaries: All areas behind closed doors are private and strictly reserved for employees.

Open Communication: If you have questions or feedback, please connect with the instructor before or after class, or contact studio administration. All student concerns are handled privately and respectfully, whenever possible.
